For those not in the know, Dan was the director of the Mathematical videos.
I don’t know if he left of his own volition or was fired, but it’s obvious that he’s had to leave because of the huge backlash regarding Tuesday’s video.
I feel pretty sick regarding all of this. First off, I still think he did nothing wrong by making that video, which encouraged fans to have a discussion about the possibility of a queer relationship on a cartoon. I think it was an amazing thing he did, and it’s really gut-wrenching to me to think how wrong it is that he was fired over it.
But most of all I feel really shitty because I feel partly responsible for this. I was the main organizer of the masses of messages to Cartoon Network and the video channel to appeal to have the video returned. I knew we would make a huge impact, but I didn’t think it would end up with the dismissal of the guy who was supporting us all along. While I’m glad our voices were heard by the higher ups, and much good debate and discussion was had, it’s absolutely not fair to Dan that he had to leave his job over this. I feel so guilty right now, it’s making me a bit nauseous.
I am really upset that the main person supporting us is out of a job. (And that a certain writer who shall not be named still gets to keep his.) Dan, thank you for supporting the representation and discussion of queer characters. It really meant a lot to me, and thousands of other fans. Please don’t get scared into silence, we desperately need more people like you.
